HELLMAN RESIDENCE
Overview: Situated in the Historic Red Square District, the project proved to use more knowledge of preservation and archeology than that of progressive architectural design. The design investigate techniques to reclaim a rather poorly amended existing floor plan, consisting primarily of a series of small rooms situated along a long, dark corridor. Although all primary rooms had access to large windows overlooking Red Square, each room lacked the rich, ornate air typical of Classic Regency Russian architecture. “I think one of the hardest skills for an architect to learn is to let the design lead itself. It’s a humbling experience to understand that you are not always in complete control of the project. The ultimate goal is not authorship but a contributing creation. A hundred years from now I will not be here, but this space will, and it needs to have the ability to be beautiful and meaningful to others. This is the wonderful calling of architecture. It is an art, but an imposed art all the same. You do not have to read a book, nor do you have to look at a painting if it does not appealing. But our built environment is public by nature and therefore must be endured rather than enjoyed if it is not executed with lasting use and delight in mind. This is why I believe that architecture is such a potentially dangerous occupation if in the wrong hands.” Awards Comments: "This project is beautifully detailed and clearly shows the amount of attention required to pull this project off so well. We just wish we have more information on the existing conditions."
